What Is Liquid Immersion Cooling

Liquid Immersion Cooling replaces air as the primary heat transfer medium inside the data centre. Instead of forcing chilled air through server racks using energy‑intensive cooling systems, immersion cooling submerges IT hardware directly into a dielectric liquid that absorbs and removes heat far more efficiently.

Because the liquid is electrically non‑conductive and non‑corrosive, electronic components can operate safely while fully submerged. This approach eliminates the need for traditional cooling infrastructure such as:

  • Server fans

  • Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units

  • Hot and cold aisle containment

  • Raised floors and complex airflow management

The result is a simpler, more efficient, and more sustainable data centre architecture.

How Liquid Immersion Cooling Works

Modified servers are installed inside sealed immersion tanks filled with a specialist dielectric fluid (coolant). Entire systems — CPUs, memory, storage devices, power supplies, and network components — operate fully submerged within the liquid.

The fluid does not conduct electricity, allowing safe operation while providing consistent thermal contact with all heat‑generating components.

As electronic components operate, heat is transferred directly from their surfaces into the surrounding liquid. Compared to air, liquid has:

  • Significantly higher thermal conductivity

  • Much greater heat capacity

  • Uniform heat absorption across all components

This enables rapid and even heat removal, eliminating hotspots and thermal throttling.

PeaSoup uses single‑phase liquid immersion cooling, where the fluid remains in a liquid state at all times.

  • Warm liquid naturally rises or is gently circulated using low‑energy pumps

  • Heat is transferred through a heat exchanger to a secondary water loop

  • The secondary loop rejects heat via dry coolers or supports heat‑reuse strategies

This approach provides excellent thermal stability while maintaining operational simplicity and long‑term reliability.

Because heat is removed by the liquid, server fans are removed or disabled entirely. This delivers multiple benefits:

  • Reduced server power consumption (fans can account for 10–20% of IT power)

  • Elimination of vibration, dust, and airborne contamination

  • Lower mechanical failure rates and improved component longevity

For PeaSoup’s storage platforms, this enables fanless operation of helium‑filled hard drives, improving reliability, lifespan, and energy efficiency.
