Backup vs Replication: What’s the Difference?

Backup and replication are both used to protect business data and workloads, but they serve different purposes.

Backup is primarily designed to preserve recoverable copies of data, while replication is designed to maintain a copy of a workload or data in another environment to support faster recovery.

For many organisations, the question isn’t whether to use backup or replication. A resilient data-protection strategy may use both.


What Is Backup?

A backup is a separate copy of data that can be used to recover information following accidental deletion, hardware failure, corruption, ransomware or another incident.

Backups are typically created at scheduled intervals and retained for defined periods. Depending on the backup strategy, organisations may maintain multiple recovery points covering days, weeks, months or longer.

This ability to recover historical versions of data is one of backup’s most important characteristics.


What Is Replication?

Replication creates and maintains a copy of data or a workload in another location or environment.

For disaster recovery, virtual machines and their data can be replicated to secondary infrastructure. If the primary environment becomes unavailable, the replicated workloads can potentially be started at the recovery location.

Replication can occur at different frequencies depending on the technology being used. Some solutions replicate changes periodically, while continuous data protection can provide much more frequent recovery points.

The principal objective is usually rapid recovery and availability, rather than long-term retention.

Does Replication Replace Backup?

No.

Replication can provide rapid access to another copy of a workload, but it can also replicate unwanted changes.

If data is corrupted, accidentally deleted or encrypted by ransomware, those changes could potentially be replicated to the secondary environment.

Backup provides historical recovery points that allow organisations to return to an earlier version of their data.

Conversely, backup alone may not provide the recovery speed required for a critical application. Restoring large workloads and rebuilding supporting infrastructure can take time.

This is why backup and replication are complementary rather than interchangeable.

Backup protects recoverability. Replication primarily supports availability and faster disaster recovery.


When Should Organisations Use Backup?

Backup is appropriate when organisations need to:

  • recover accidentally deleted or corrupted data;
  • maintain historical recovery points;
  • retain data for longer periods;

  • recover individual files, applications or entire workloads.

For most organisations, backup remains a fundamental part of data protection.


When Is Replication Useful?

Replication becomes particularly valuable where the time required to restore systems from backup would exceed acceptable downtime.

Typical scenarios include:

  • critical applications;
  • virtual infrastructure;
  • transactional systems;
  • disaster recovery between locations;
  • workloads with aggressive RPO and RTO requirements.

The more costly an outage becomes, the stronger the case may be for maintaining recovery infrastructure rather than relying solely on restoration from backup.


Backup, Replication and Disaster Recovery

Backup protects copies of data. Replication helps make workloads available elsewhere. Disaster recovery brings these technologies together with infrastructure, networking, processes and recovery procedures.

The appropriate combination should therefore be determined by Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs).

Some workloads may recover perfectly adequately from backup. Others may require replication to meet much shorter recovery objectives.
